Hot Sites – Back Them Up!

I had an issue with my computer this week. It crashed. It crashed so hard that on a reboot I momentarily lost access to all of my bookmarks. Momentarily meaning a few days until a friend of mine showed me how to get them back, for which I am forever grateful. Once I had them back, he gave me a lecture on backing up. One I totally deserved, because although I was super good at backing up all of my files and work, I never thought once about backing up my bookmarks. But I can’t tell you how lost I have felt without them in the last few days, nor did I realize just how heavily I depended on them. My bookmarks are a lifeline to my business as I am constantly handing out reference links to those around me. Without them, progress tends to come to a screeching halt.

So, today’s Hot Site is actually a lesson in how to back up your own Hot Sites. Below are How To’s for FireFox, Internet Explorer, Safari, Chrome, and Opera in backing up. Just click the pic of your browser an it will link you to the corresponding How To.

Take it from me, loosing your bookmarks can be a painful experience, and one I hope you never have to live through. But with these How To’s – you won’t ever have to. So get going and BACK THEM UP!!!

And for more information on backing up your data, be sure to check out this great article called Best Practices of Digital Asset Management written by the friend who gave me the lecture. ;)

    Excellent advice!!

For all of us Safari for Windows users, go to your browsers File menu and choose “Export Bookmarks” to save the html file. Just remember where you save it *blush*, and to backup regularly (about once a month for me)!

  2. A great resource Ms. Firgs! I’d like to reference this on the next Data Backup Day which is October 1.

    Thanks Firgs!

Ah, so you don’t need to set up a website, put all your bookmarks on it and end up with a daily blog that consumes your life? Damn!

Another quality article firgs. You always go that little extra mile, and as a fan, I’m very grateful.

Very cool that you were able to recover from the crash. I’ve been using XMarks (formerly Foxmarks) to backup and synchronize my favorites across computers. I saw it mentioned on a couple of pages you linked as well. http://www.xmarks.com/

    “Okay, I won’t link back to you…”

“Where’s that guest post you wrote?”

Why did I not see the disparity? LOL

  7. Oh, it can be a major headache! I’ve experienced this before, and it’s just so hard building up one’s bookmarks again. I had all these important sites for work as well so those were lost :( Wish I knew how to recover them before.
