In Blogs We Trust
I am feeling wicked and sarcastic at the moment. It’s not something I can help really. My whole family is a bunch of smart mouthed, wise crackers – so I guess I come by it honestly. But right now, there are some things that are triggering this genealogical side effect when it comes to blogging. I don’t claim to have voices in my head, but if I did, I imagine one of them would sound a lot like Luis Black. Am I honestly ranting? Maybe. A little. But for the most part, I’m just in it for the sarcastic irony and humor.

Take for instance the word Blog. Now I know that it’s a combination of the two words "Web" and "Log" meaning that it is a daily record of some sort to be displayed on the Internet for all to see – but really, who was the genius that came up with that name? When ever I say it, I feel like words are going to come up from my gut, spill out of my mouth and splash all over my computer. All I can see in my head is this scene in a movie of a young kid making puking noises – Chunk from Goonies to be exact. (I know, great movie!) But seriously, we are intelligent people. I am sure that we can develop a better name than one that resembles pre-pubescent humor. We can, can’t we? I’m taking suggestions on this matter.

Here’s another one – We treat our websites like our closets. When we first start out, our website is fresh and clean and pretty much empty. As we go, we begin to gather information. We never throw anything away because of the possibility that it may come in handy one day. So, we’ll stuff it onto our sidebar or in a category somewhere and before we know it everything starts to look like that one closet in our house that is holding all the stuff we may never use but that we just can’t seem to let go of. That is, until it becomes overwhelming and we start to do some major cleaning and reorganizing. Then it’s a mad whirl wind of "toss this" "keep that" "redesign this" "redecorate that" and before we know it, we pretty much have a new website on our hands. Some of us even build extra websites to hold all of the stuff we just don’t want to throw away like that storage unit that you can’t find the key to.

Here’s my favorite – The "No Post" post. I have done this one myself, but I have yet to figure out why. When your busy life is taking over and you need a day off from your website there is a certain obligation to your readers to let them know what’s up. So instead of just vanishing, you write the "No Post" post. It goes something like this: "Hi all! Things are crazy, I’m taking the day off. No post today, check back tomorrow." That’s the short version anyway. Some "No Post" posts go on for a few paragraphs. I’ve seen it. I’ve done it. Now, I question it. If you are writing a post to tell others there will be no post, doesn’t that negate the very idea of not posting something?

All in all though, I enjoy the blogger world. Because when all else fails, it’s a good source of entertainment.
Have a great weekend every body! Don’t forget to blog about it when it’s over.
